Meet the team – Lochie
This month we talk to Lochie McCabe, our estimating specialist at FleetCo. Lochie works behind the scenes, pulling together our strategies on maintenance, selecting equipment to tender and ensuring we deliver equipment fit for purpose. A mechanical engineer by trade, Lochie started out as a graduate with Thiess in 2017 on our Jellinbah Plains project in Central Queensland.
Where did you grow up?
Peregian Beach, Sunshine Coast – I moved to Brisbane when I was 17 to study. It has since been my base, following work opportunities in Gunnedah, Blackwater and Moranbah.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Growing up on the beach, a professional career in surfing was always the dream. It was only late in my study as a Mechanical Engineer that I came to understand just how significant an opportunity the mining industry presents.
Why did you join FleetCo?
I had provided estimating support to FleetCo in the past through another role in Thiess. I loved the culture I saw within the Team – More than just a strong social connection, the team is agile and able to quickly recognise and adapt to changing market cycles.
What has been your best work achievement?
While in tendering-based roles in Thiess, I was involved in pricing over $2B worth of work. Within FleetCo I look forward to developing my commercial acumen and working with the team to covert tendering opportunities into ‘work in hand’.
Why do you enjoy working in the mining industry?
I love the fast pace, high value decisions that I am involved in every day, and the amazing people that this industry attracts.
What do you do away for work to relax?
I recently broke 120 on the golf course. With 3 lessons a week my golf instructor thinks I can break 100 by 2030.
